An Introduction to Non-toxic Green Cleaning

Updated: Feb 25

Green cleaning isn’t just a trend; it’s a lifestyle that transforms your home into a haven for health and sustainability. For me, this journey began in 2020—a year that forced us all to rethink how we live and care for our families.

During the chaos of that time, I was suffering from serious health anxiety. I found myself obsessively cleaning and disinfecting, especially in the bathrooms, where bleach became my go-to. As someone with asthma, this was a disastrous combination. The overpowering fumes left me struggling to breathe, and I realised that my attempts to keep my home safe were actually putting my health at risk.

I have three children, and creating a healthy home for them has always been my priority. I wanted a sparkling clean house but without the harmful chemicals. That’s when I began exploring alternative cleaning methods, and it changed my life.

Why Non-Toxic Cleaning Matters

Many conventional cleaning products are loaded with harsh chemicals that can irritate the lungs, skin, and eyes. Prolonged exposure may even lead to more serious health problems. Switching to non-toxic cleaning offers benefits such as:

• Safer air quality, especially for asthma sufferers and children.

• Reduced exposure to synthetic chemicals that may disrupt hormones.

• An environmentally friendly approach with fewer toxins being washed into water systems.

• Cost savings by using simple, multi-purpose ingredients.

It’s all about cleaning smarter, not harder, while protecting both your loved ones and the planet.

Introducing Pure Sparkle: Your Go-To All-Purpose Cleaner

As part of my green cleaning journey, I remembered a recipe that my Grandma used to tackle mould in her bathroom, and decided to give it a whirl, Pure Sparkle. This natural, non-toxic cleaner is designed to keep your home fresh, tidy, and gleaming without compromising your health.

Here’s the simple yet powerful recipe:

• 100ml white vinegar

• 250ml distilled water

• 60ml surgical spirit or 70% rubbing alcohol

• 10 drops bergamot essential oil

• 10 drops sweet orange essential oil

If you have pets, it’s important to be mindful of essential oils, as some can be harmful to animals when inhaled or ingested. You can either omit the essential oils in Pure Sparkle altogether or swap them for pet-safe options like lavender or chamomile essential oil. Always ensure proper ventilation and avoid spraying directly around your pets.

To make it, combine these ingredients in a glass amber jar to protect the essential oils from degrading. Shake the jar well before each use, spray onto surfaces, and wipe away with a clean cloth.

What Can Pure Sparkle Be Used For?

• Glass and Mirrors: Leaves them streak-free and shining.

• Countertops: Ideal for non-porous surfaces like laminate or sealed stone.

• Bathroom Fixtures: Effectively cleans taps, sinks, and shower screens.

• Everyday Surfaces: Great for quick wipe-downs in kitchens and dining areas.

NOT suitable for :

  • Granite, slate and marble are sensitive to acidic cleaners like vinegar, which can erode the surface and dull its finish. A safe alternative is a gentle solution of 250ml distilled water, 60ml rubbing alcohol (70%), and a few drops of non-acidic essential oils like chamomile or lavender. This mix cleans, disinfects, and preserves the natural beauty of them.

The Benefits of Pure Sparkle

• Safe for the Whole Family: No harmful fumes, making it perfect for homes with kids or pets.

• Asthma-Friendly: Avoids triggers commonly found in conventional products.

• Uplifting Scent: The blend of bergamot and sweet orange essential oils leaves your home smelling clean and bright.

• Eco-Friendly: Uses simple, biodegradable ingredients that are gentle on the planet.

Why Start Now?

Making the switch to green cleaning can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Begin with one product, like Pure Sparkle, and build your collection from there. By embracing non-toxic cleaning, you’re creating a home that nurtures health, happiness, and harmony.

Where can I buy distilled water? Or is it ok to use cool boiled water?

Replying to

I have put some on the link, I often use cool boiled water it’s cheaper, Distilled water is water that has been purified through distillation, a process that involves boiling the water, capturing the steam, and condensing it back into liquid form. This removes impurities, minerals, and contaminants, leaving pure H2O.

Cool boiled kettle water, on the other hand, is tap water that has been boiled to kill bacteria and some microorganisms, but it still contains minerals and other impurities found in the original tap water. While boiled water is safer for drinking or cooking, it’s not as pure as distilled water, which makes the latter ideal for cleaning products where mineral-free water ensures streak-free results and prevents residue.
