As the wheel of the year turns once again, we reach the radiant height of summer — the Summer Solstice — when the sun sits highest in the sky and gifts us the longest day and shortest night of the year. The word ‘solstice’ comes from the Latin words for sun (sol) and to stand (sistere). It's the time of year when the position of the rising or setting sun stands still in its movement along the horizon. Summer solstice occurs on the longest day of the year, usually 21 June, although as with all things nature-led, it can be felt and honoured gently in the days either side.
This is a time bathed in light, when the Earth feels warm, alive and buzzing with possibility. It’s an invitation to slow down and soak it in. Let your bare feet feel the grass, your heart feel the gratitude, and your skin drink in the sun.
What the Solstice Symbolises
The solstice reminds us of our connection to the sun — that fiery star that lights and sustains all life. It’s a portal of growth, transformation, and celebration. In ancient times, people gathered to honour this turning point with bonfires, feasts, music, and ritual, welcoming the abundance of summer and the gifts still to come.
Simple Ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice
There’s no pressure to do it all — this isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about tuning in. If you feel called to mark it, do what feels good. And if life takes over, that’s okay too — the solstice lives in your awareness and intention.
Here are some soul-nourishing ways to honour this special time:
Watch the Sunrise
Rise early and greet the day. This act alone connects you to the energy of new beginnings.
Nature Walk
Wander through woodland, your garden, or a local meadow. Pause to notice the flowers, bees, warmth, and scent of the season.
Fire Ritual
Build a little bonfire (or simply light a candle). Whisper your wishes into the flame, release what no longer serves, and soak in the heat and glow.
Make Sun Water
Fill a glass jug with water and leave it in the sun for a few hours. Add herbs like lemon balm or mint — or even use it as a cleansing spray around your home.
🍋 Sip Solstice Herbal Tea
Try this calming, sun-kissed recipe:
Chamomile
Lavender
Lemon slices
A spoonful of honey
Steep gently and sip with intention.
Garden Magic
Plant something new or tend to what’s already growing. Welcome in abundance with every seed and every bloom.
💎 Work with Crystals
Lean into the energy of:
Sunstone – joy and vitality
Citrine – abundance and creativity
Carnelian – confidence and courage
Tiger’s Eye – strength and focus

Journal & Press Flowers
Pop out to the garden, press a few petals, and write down how you feel in this moment. What are you growing – literally and metaphorically?

Yoga or Meditation Outdoors
Let the sun warm your shoulders as you breathe, stretch, and just be.
Host a Solstice Picnic or Feast
Lay out a blanket, bring seasonal foods like strawberries, salads, sourdough, and elderflower cordial — and share it with someone you love (even if it’s just yourself).
Stargazing
Close the day by lying under the stars, noticing how the longest day slowly gives way to the shortest night. A beautiful balance.
🌞 A Note from The Cottage
However you celebrate (or don’t), know that you are part of something ancient and beautiful. Let this solstice remind you to shine your light, to receive joy fully, and to keep growing in your own time.
If you do try one of the rituals above — especially making sun water or tea — do tag me over on Instagram @the__cottage__on__cow__lane. I’d love to see your solstice moments.
And remember — if the solstice passes quietly this year, that’s okay too. Nature never rushes, and neither should we.
With warmth and sunshine,
